Firebirds baseball wins, 4-2

Dane McCullough pitched six perfect innings, and Free State defeated Olathe East, 4-2 in 11 innings, in high school baseball Thursday at Free State.

The game originally scheduled for Olathe was moved to Free State because of better playing conditions, and FSHS was the visiting team.

McCullough took a perfect game and the Firebirds took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. But Olathe East opened the inning with three straight hits to tie the game at 2.

Sam Hearnen came on with no outs in the sixth and pitched the final five innings.

“The pitching was outstanding on both sides,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said. “I thought the Olathe East kids were fantastic, and I thought our kids were super.”

Free State (3-0) will host Blue Valley Southwest at 3:30 p.m. today.
