BYU baseball tops Kansas, 6-3

? Three errors led to three unearned runs, and Kansas University’s baseball team fell, 6-3, to BYU on Saturday at Larry H. Miller Park.

The Jayhawks (14-8) lost the snow-shortened series, 2-1. The Cougars (11-12) were scheduled to host KU for a game Friday, but that game was rescheduled as part of a Saturday doubleheader and ultimately canceled because of sub-freezing temperatures.

BYU jumped to an early 4-0 lead after two KU errors in the third inning. The Cougars added two more runs before the Jayhawks finally scored in the seventh inning on RBI singles by Justin Protacio and Tommy Mirabelli. Michael Suiter drove in the final KU run with a single in the eighth.

Despite 11 hits and seven walks, the Jayhawks left a season-high 16 men on base — six during KU’s attempted rally in the final three innings. Ka’iana Eldredge led the offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, including a double.

Starting pitcher Wes Benjamin (2-3) took the loss, allowing five runs — two earned — with eight hits, two walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Jeff Barker (3-2) earned the win for BYU.

KU travels to face Missouri State at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Springfield, Mo.
