From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 23, 1988:
- Firefighters from Tonganoxie Township had worked the previous afternoon to contain a fire in a horse trailer and adjacent horse barn at the Jim and Karen Gambrill farm. No injuries had resulted from the blaze and all horses had been safely removed, but the fire had destroyed the horse barn, a hay barn, and a shed. Firefighters had also been kept busy after high winds had carried sparks from the fire to a nearby pasture and across the road to property owned by John Lenahan.
- Two Lawrence teams were joining 91 other basketball teams competing this weekend in Hays at the 20th Annual Kansas Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament. Gary Scott of Lawrence Parks and Recreation said today that 15 Lawrence residents were planning to compete and would be accompanied on the trip to Fort Hays State University by Scott and five other coaches.
