A 19-year-old Lawrence man has been sentenced to three years of probation for his part in a Jan. 17 home invasion at an apartment in the 1700 block of West 24th Street. Prosecutors accused Robert Lee Coleman, 19, Lawrence, Quentin Marcel Hill, 18, Lawrence, and Charles T. Brockman, 25, Perry, of using a BB gun to commit a robbery at a Lawrence apartment, stealing $260 in cash, a television, a Playstation gaming system, and a jar containing six grams of marijuana.

Robert Lee Coleman was sentenced Thursday in Douglas County Court after being found guilty in February of aggravated robbery and one misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana.

In sentencing Colemean to probation, Douglas County District Court Judge Michael Malone granted Coleman a departure from state sentencing guidelines, which normally require a prison sentence for aggravated robbery.

Malone said he granted the departure because Coleman had no criminal history and took a minor role in the offense, and because the weapon involved was a BB gun and not a deadly firearm. But he also said Coleman would almost certainly go to prison for almost five years if he violated conditions of probation.

“The victim was hurt in this case,” Malone said.

Brockman, who also admitted striking one of the residents of the apartment in the face, was also sentenced to probation on similar grounds.

Hill, the third defendant, has pleaded no contest to conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary and is scheduled for sentencing on April 19.
