The Fashion Column: Spring accessories report

A new season calls for brand-new trends that I’m typically eager to try — or, in some cases, to completely avoid.

I’m all about wearing the latest trends, but I stick to an important fashion rule I’ve made up for myself: Only wear trends that you are comfortable and confident wearing, because I truly believe it shows if you’re not comfortable with your outfit.

That being said, there are several unique and striking accessory trends popping up in the retail world, and I’m ready to give them a whirl.

Jewelry plays a pivotal role in any outfit, meaning it can be a complete game-changer. Let’s say you throw on a simple jeans-and-tee outfit, but add in a statement necklace and layer on some stackable bracelets. All of a sudden, your simple look just got a noticeable upgrade.

There are a couple of new and recycled trends that have caught my eye for spring. Brooches have made a comeback in a big way. Instead of throwing them on the designated shoulder of your sweater, place them front and center on a buttoned-to-the-top collared shirt.

I’m drawn to this menswear-inspired trend because it looks polished and put-together. Since brooches were put on the map long ago, you can find affordable styles at thrift and vintage stores. This is a great way to save a few bucks, especially if you like to shop as much as I do.

There are two more trends surfacing that I plan to wear all spring and summer. Delicate and statement jewelry can be found just about everywhere. Urban Outfitters has some of my favorite simplistic pieces, including a hand harness, which I’ve been eyeing for weeks. Francesca’s is the hub for colorful and affordable statement jewelry that really makes an outfit pop.

Bags don’t just serve as a stylish accessory; for me, their practical use is key. Crossbody bags and clutches are my favorite styles, hands down. Here’s why: Crossbody automatically translates to hands-free.

Clutches come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and the fact that they are lightweight makes them my go-to bag for any event or night out.

I’m currently obsessed with both bag styles in many colors. Bright colors and pastels are particularly popular for the upcoming spring and summer season. I’ve seen some really great styles from Zara.com, Kieu’s and Britches.

Sunglasses have always been, again, a practical piece in my wardrobe. Honestly, I’ve never really invested in a designer pair because I’ve been known to either lose them or accidentally break them. However, I’ve been on the search for a nice pair of sunglasses because the older I get, the better I take care of my wardrobe.

There’s an infinite amount of styles out there, but this season I’ll be wearing the circle and cat-eye frames. Check out Urban Outfitters for on-trend, affordable sunglasses, and Hobbs for some fabulous European-inspired styles if you’re in the mood to invest.
