25 years ago: Holcom on schedule for summer opening

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 14, 1988:

  • Work on the $1.3 million Holcom Park Recreation Center was reported to be about 70 percent complete, according to Fred DeVictor, Lawrence parks and recreation director. Interior work was on schedule with crews building dividing walls and installing electrical wire, plumbing, and ductwork. DeVictor predicted that the facility near 27th and Lawrence Avenue would be complete in June, with a grand opening in May. Holcom was to be the city’s fourth recreation center.
  • The Kansas University men’s basketball team was scheduled to play their first game in the NCAA tournament this coming Friday. The 6th-seeded Jayhawks were to tip off against Xavier (11) at 9:37 p.m.
