Apramay Mishra, an eighth-grade student at Southwest Middle School, still has a chance to qualify for the national chess championship tournament this summer.

Mishra finished in a three-way tie for first place Saturday at the Kansas Scholastic Chess Association state tournament in Wichita.

As a result, tournament organizers said, he’ll have to play in a tie-breaking round robin match against the two other top finishers — Joshua Fernandes, of Wichita Collegiate, and Zachary Schuh, of California Trails Junior High in Olathe — to decide which one gets to claim the state title. The time and place of that match have not yet been decided.

The winner will go on to the Barber Tournament of K-8 Champions July 27-30 in Middleton, Wis.

Apramay was just one of several Lawrence-area chess players who brought home trophies and titles from the state tournament at the Independent School in Wichita, where 591 players from elementary, middle and high schools throughout Kansas competed.

Lawrence schools swept the high school team competition, with Free State High School winning first, just ahead of second-place finisher Lawrence High School.

The team from Southwest Middle School took first in the K-8 competition.

Cordley and Sunset Hill schools took first and second respectively in the K-5 competition.

Raintree Montessori won second place in the K-3 category, followed by Cordley in third place, Prairie Park School in eighth, and Quail Run in ninth.

In addition to Apramay, other individual players from the Lawrence area included:

• Aaron Simon, Free State, fifth place.

K-5:

• Ryan Duan, Quail Run School, fourth place.

• Ben Hoopes, Cordley, ninth place.

• Guthrie Bricker, Cordley, 10th place.

K-3:

• Aidan Jayaraman, Quail Run, second place.

• Oliver Rubenstein, Raintree, fourth place.
