From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 9, 1913:

• “Spring has come. At any rate it will be hard to make people believe that it has not. Yesterday was a delightful day and it seemed that every resident in town was in the open. Also there were many birds to be seen. The spring birds are coming back fast. This is a good sign of spring but not an infallible one. Birds are not particularly good prophets. They come and they get frozen to death. When the warm days come they get tired of the monotony of the far south life and are eager to get north. That results in many of them freezing. However, a month of comparatively good weather is promised and by that time real almanac spring will have arrived.”
• “The basketball championship of the Missouri Valley Conference will be settled in a series of three games between Nebraska and Kansas commencing next Monday night. The first game will be played in Lincoln and the second in Lawrence on Tuesday night and in case a third game is necessary to play off a tie, the final clash will be staged on the Aggie court at Manhattan. The above arrangements were concluded in a conference between Manager W. O. Hamilton and Coach E. W. Stiehm at Kansas City yesterday. An agreement was also reached as to the officials and the interpretation of the rules.”
• “If the wishes of the Kansas Conference as expressed in a vote taken this morning are carried out, two Methodist Conferences will be consolidated into one in the near future. The two conferences to be affected by this change will be the Kansas conference, which is in session here this week, and the south Kansas Conference.”
