40 years ago: Rain dampens ardor of primary voters

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 6, 1973:

Douglas County voters were heading to the polls today to cast ballots in city and school board elections. Rainy weather might have been a factor in the light turnout reported at a noon check of polling places. Up until lunchtime, only 1,964 ballots had been cast at the 17 Lawrence polling places.. In the last city election, 2,611 voters had turned out by noon. The “student vote” was even more sparse this morning. At Allen Fieldhouse, where 2,260 vote had been recorded in the general election this past November, only 81 votes had been recorded so far this morning. Lawrence voters had the job of trimming a field of 14 candidates to six for the April 3 general election, and school district voters were cutting a field of seven candidates down to six for the general balloting.
