No charges yet, but information about alleged turkey abuse case sent to D.A.’s office

No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed, but police have forwarded information about an alleged Dec. 14, 2012, turkey abuse incident at a Kansas University fraternity to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

“It is under review and there is no timeline for a charging,” said Cheryl Wright Kunard, a spokeswoman for the D.A.’s office.

The investigation stems from an incident at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, 1425 Tennessee St. According to police, witnesses reported that a turkey — obtained for a winter party — had been “poked by individuals through the cage and heckled during the evening.” The turkey also was “chased and abused by several individuals present at the party, seriously injuring the animal.” Someone then killed the turkey, and police were called.

In December, the national chapter of Beta Theta Pi announced that the KU chapter and its activities were suspended indefinitely, pending an investigation.

At KU, the national organization, as well as the KU Interfraternity Council, are responsible for investigating such cases and taking action. A spokesman for the national organization was not available Tuesday.

Sgt. Trent McKinley, a spokesman for the Lawrence police, said that a news release would most likely be issued if and when any charges are filed.
