Runners gear up for Mass Street Mile

Right after the Tour of Lawrence ends Sunday, the cyclists will leave downtown and the runners will take over.

The Mass Street Mile, an event for competitive and recreational runners, will start at 12:30 p.m. with a men’s competitive race. The women’s competitive mile will begin at 12:35 p.m., and a recreational mile will follow at 12:40 p.m. All runs begin and end outside of Weaver’s Department Store, 901 Massachusetts St.

Van Go Inc., a local job-training and art program for at-risk young adults, is the beneficiary of the race. The top three finishers in each race will receive Van Go artwork. First-place winners in the competitive miles will win $100 gift certificates to Sunflower Outdoor and Bike, and everyone who enters will be presented with a custom glass mug designed by Van Go.

To register, go online to themassstmile.com, or register on race day at the corner of Ninth and Massachusetts streets starting at 10 a.m. The cost of entry is $15 for the competitive races, and the recreational mile is free to enter.

Strollers and dogs are welcome in the recreational mile, but bicycles, roller skates, roller blades and skateboards are prohibited.
