From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 27, 1973:

• Lawrence City Commissioners this week were urging Neighborhood Development Program director Don Schaake and members of the East Lawrence Improvement Association to “get moving” on sidewalk and alleyway repairs. Commissioners and a half-dozen ELA members took a brief tour of the East Lawrence neighborhood with special attention to alleys and sidewalks, particularly overgrown brick sidewalks. Schaake reported that five alleys in the area were in “fair to bad” condition and could use overlaying. The group gave unanimous approval to the idea of hiring local youths to clean up the sidewalks, and Schaake was urged to start a team soon. Repairs to the problem areas were to be funded by the ELA’s $50,000 share of the city revenue-sharing funds.
• More than $40,000 in additional state funds could be expected in Douglas County next year as the result of the 1973 agricultural census. The headcount showed a population increase of 4,481 residents, making a total of 59,264 in the county. The count was made by personal canvass in the rural areas, and by using birth and death records and automobile and voter registrations in the cities.
