FSHS, LHS track athletes earn all-league honors

The late-spring performances by track and field athletes at Free State and Lawrence high schools secured numerous selections for the Firebirds and Lions on the 2013 All-Sunflower League teams.

The Class 6A champion Free State girls occupied the most spots among city teams, which were determined by the number of points scored by an athlete in her or his event, with state performances worth twice as much. Alexa Harmon-Thomas earned first-team recognition in both the 100 and 300 hurdles, as well as the long jump. Bailey Sullivan was the league’s first-team 1,600 runner.

The Lawrence girls also had several all-league performers.

Matia Finley earned first-team honors in the discus, and the 6A state champion 4×400 relay team of Leah Gabler, Marissa Pope, Jensen Edwards and Kyleigh Severa also topped the Sunflower League.

Free State pole vaulter Dan Krieger was the only city athlete on the boys’ first team.

Harmon-Thomas (high jump) and Sullivan (800) also appeared on the second team, with FSHS teammates Laura Kennard (400) and Kiara Clark (300 hurdles).

Lawrence’s Rebecca Finley (shot put, discus) and Grace Morgan (3200) were named to the second team.

The following FSHS girls picked up honorable mention: Gabbi Dabney (high jump, 100 hurdles), Kailee Dudley (shot put), Hannah Shoemaker (discus), Clark (100 hurdles) and Kennard (200).

Receiving honorable mention from the LHS girls were: Monica Howard (high jump), Edwards (400) and Morgan (1,600).

Free State placed three boys on the honorable mention list: Lucas Werner (javelin), Stan Skwarlo (800, 1,600) and TJ Cobbs (300 hurdles).

Lawrence triple jumper Erik Parrish also picked up honorable mention.
