40 years ago: Summer movie season begins in local theaters

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 21, 1973:

“Summertime is Show Time!” proclaimed a banner on today’s page of movie listings. Patrons of Lawrence movie theaters this week could see Peter O’Toole in “The Ruling Class,” an anthology of “Ten From ‘Your Show of Shows,'” “The Mack,” “Walking Tall,” and a new musical adaptation of “Tom Sawyer” with Johnny Whitaker and Celeste Holm. The banner at the top of the page urged movie fans to “Watch for These Summertime Attractions…. ‘Mary Poppins’ … ‘Live & Let Die’ (Bond) … ‘High Plains Drifter’ … ‘Paper Moon’ … ‘Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid’ … and MORE!”

Members of the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Board, Lawrence City Commission, hospital medical staff and representatives from the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce were all meeting this week to discuss possible future building needs of the hospital. According to LMH board president Warren Rhodes, projections indicated the need for expansions to the current facility that could cost up to $6.2 million.
