40 years ago: Old police building considered for City Hall location

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 20, 1973:

The Lawrence City Commission this week approved a motion to move city hall to the police department building when a new county-city law enforcement center was completed. John Emick had supported Mayor Nancy Hambleton’s amendment to give strong consideration to the motion “but not a definite decision that we use it for that,” adding, “I don’t like to tie myself into using the old police department for a city hall…. I think it needs a lot of study to decide whether we’re sending good money after bad.” Commissioner Jack Rose said that the police building at Eighth and Vermont, which had been built in 1950, was physically sound and could be remodeled effectively; however, city manager Buford Watson agreed with Emick and Hambleton, stating, “I think it’s shortsighted to think that location will take care of the city hall over a long period of time.”
