The public can enjoy rides, competitions, concerts and a parade while learning Kansas history at Historic Lecompton Territorial Days this weekend.

Lecompton, the Territorial Capitol of Kansas from 1855 to 1861, will host its annual community celebration with classic carnival fun and the opportunity for guests to learn about pioneer skills with settler demonstrations from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and to tour historic buildings from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The carnival will be Friday and Saturday nights from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Special to this year’s festivities, the original tombstone of the infamous Territorial Sheriff Samuel Jones from Las Cruces, N.M., will be placed at 2 p.m. Saturday. Jones, a pro-slavery sympathizer, was sheriff of Douglas County during the early years of “Bleeding Kansas” tension.
