Lawrence City Commission agenda for June 11 meeting

Bottom line

City commissioners will receive another update on efforts to find a temporary downtown transfer location for the city’s public transit buses. Commissioners asked staff members to consider a site near 10th and Kentucky streets. Staff members have recommended a temporary transfer location in the 800 block of Vermont Street, but several merchants have expressed concern about the amount of parking that would be lost on Vermont Street.

Background

Staff members still favor the 800 block of Vermont over the 10th and Kentucky location. The city’s transit staff estimates it will cost about $180,000 to make several repairs to sidewalks and curbs in the area to accommodate transit users with disabilities. They also have said if buses park on both sides of 10th Street, which is likely, the road would be reduced to one lane of traffic. The city’s looking for a new downtown transfer location because construction work on a new hotel at Ninth and New Hampshire streets will interfere with the current transfer site. The city also is expected to receive a report later this year regarding several potential locations for a permanent transfer station for the transit system.
