Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. Lawrence/Free State youth football camp: The Lawrence/Free State youth football camp will run June 24-26. Session for students entering third/fourth grades will run 8:30-10:30 a.m.; fifth-eighth graders will go 8:30 a.m.-noon. All city schools have camp fliers. Swim Lessons: Ad Astra Area Aquatics is offering swim lessons for children ages 3 and older. Lessons will be at Kansas University, and four different sessions are available, ranging from early June through late July. For more information, call 331-6940 or go to www.lawrenceswimschool.org.

LHS tennis camps: Lawrence High tennis camps will be open to all LHS tennis players attending LHS for the 2013-14 school year. The camps will be 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 4-July 18. There also will be a future LHS tennis camp for boys and girls in grades 6-8. The future camp will meet from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on the same dates. Players will work on tennis skills, strategies and group play. Cost for the 13 sessions is $65, or $5 a day. Hoops clinic: Perry-Lecompton High basketball will be hold an offensive-skills and shooting clinic with former NBA All-Star Otis Birdsong from 3-6 p.m., June 2, at the high school. The camp is for boys and girls entering grades 7-12. LHS alumni golf: The 14th Annual Lawrence Lions Alumni Association Scholarship Golf Tournament is 8 a.m., June 15 at Alvamar Golf Course. Entry fee is $75 per golfer and includes golf, cart, prizes and lunch. The tournament is NOT limited to LHS Alumni. Summer bike ride: Lawrence Bicycle Club Summer Fun Beginner’s Ride will be held Mondays. The ride begins at 6:45 p.m. at Cycle Works, 2121 Kasold, preceded at 6:15 for tech and riding tips. The ride will be approximately 10 miles (the first few rides will be seven miles) at 10 mph, mostly on the bike path. All are welcome; kids under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and all children under 18 must have a waiver form signed by a parent or guardian. Girls youth basketball camp: Lawrence High girls basketball coach Nick Wood and Free State High girls coach Bryan Duncan will host a basketball camp for girls entering grades 3-8. Baldwin volleyball camp: Baldwin Bulldog Volleyball Camp will be held from 1-3 p.m. June 10-13 at the Baldwin High School gym for girls grade 4 through 8. Coach Brenda Shawley and her staff will conduct the camp, which will focus on fundamental skills, game strategies and team play. Baldwin basketball camp: Baldwin Bulldog Girls Basketball Skills Camp will be held from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. June 17-20 at the Baldwin High School gym for grades 5 through 8. Head BHS girls coach Bob Martin and his staff will conduct the camp. Emphasis will be on fundamentals, defensive/offensive concepts and shooting techniques. Lecompton fun run/walk: The Lecompton Territorial Days/Lecompton Community Pride 5K Fun Run/Walk will be at 7:30 a.m. on June 22 at Lecompton High. All proceeds benefit the Lecompton Community Pride Theater renovations. Registration is $20 by June 1 or $25 after that. Jayhawk baseball summer camps: Kansas University’s Little League Day Camp (ages 5-12) will be held 9 a.m.-noon June 10-13 at Hoglund Ballpark. The Super Skills Camp (ages 9-12) will be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 24-26 at Hoglund Ballpark. The KU Baseball All Star Camp for ages 13-18 will be held July 25-28 at KU. Hughes wins: Lawrence’s Dan Hughes won the Dirty Kanza 200 bike race over the weekend in Emporia. The DK 200 is a solo, self-supported 200-mile ride on gravel and dirt roads through the Flint Hills. Hughes has won three straight DK 200 titles and four overall.
