Downtown bridge repairs to begin Monday

Traffic on the U.S. Highway 40 bridges over the Kansas River in downtown Lawrence will be reduced to one lane in each direction beginning Monday, while crews make structural repairs to the bridges.

The Kansas Department of Transportation said the lane closings will be in effect around the clock during the project, which is expected to be completed by mid-July, weather permitting.

KDOT said it will use cones and signage to direct traffic through the work zone. Advance message boards will alert drivers to the lane closures, but drivers should expect major delays during peak travel times.
