Around and About for June 1, 2013

An open house is scheduled for June 16 to celebrate Mary Gauthier’s 90th year. She is a longtime Lawrence High business teacher. The event, organized by the Gauthier family, will be from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. Second St. In lieu of gifts, donations may be made to a Mary Gauthier Scholarship for a graduating LHS senior interested in further education in the business and technical field.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln honored the following area students as High Scholars for being in the top 10 percent of their class: James Austin Epp, a junior from Bonner Springs in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources; and Megan Nicole Fleming, a sophomore from Lawrence in the College of Fine and Performing Arts.

Matt Kelso, of Eudora, has been inducted into Silver Key, the sophomore leadership honorary at Kansas State University. To be eligible for Silver Key, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Silver Key provides service to the campus and the surrounding Manhattan community.

Area students and alumni from Kansas University have won National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships or honorable mentions for 2013-14.

Honorees are listed below by name, hometown, honors while at KU and area of study:

Deena Rennerfeldt, of Lawrence: IMSD Scholar. She completed a bachelor’s degree from KU in chemical engineering. She won an NSF Fellowship.

Adela Timmons, of Lawrence: University Honors, Phi Beta Kappa, Research Experience Certification. She completed a bachelor’s degree from KU in psychology. She won an NSF Fellowship.

Rodolfo Torres, of Lawrence: IMSD Scholar, University Honors, Goldwater Scholar. He is a current student in chemistry. He won an NSF Fellowship.

More than 40 outstanding graduate students at Kansas University were recognized at the annual Graduate Student Awards Ceremony April 23 in the Kansas Union Ballroom.

Area honorees are as follows:

Marie-Odile Fortier, of Lawrence. Fortier is a doctoral student in environmental engineering and received a Graduate Research Competition Award.

Russell Harlow, of Lawrence. Harlow is a master’s student in geology and was a Capitol Graduate Research Summit Presenter.

Cullen Merritt, of Lawrence. Merritt is a doctoral student in public administration and received an honorable mention for graduate teaching.

Austin Oder, of Lawrence. Oder is a doctoral student in speech-language pathology and received a Graduate Research Competition Award.

April Rand, of Lawrence. Rand is a doctoral student in social work and received an honorable mention for graduate teaching.

Blair Schneider, of Lawrence. Schneider is a doctoral student in geology and received a Distinguished Service Award and was named a Self Graduate Fellow, 2012-2016.

Amber Smith, of Baldwin City. Smith is a doctoral student in molecular, cellular and developmental biology and received a Graduate Research Competition Award.

Stephen Walker, of Lawrence. Walker is a doctoral student in ecology and evolutionary biology and received a Graduate Research Competition Award.

Kansas State University’s School of Leadership Studies has recognized Morgan Peelen, of Ottawa, for excellence in leadership and civic engagement. Peelen was honored at the school’s Celebrating Service and Leadership event on April 21. Peelen, senior in social sciences with a focus in rural community development and a minor in leadership studies with a nonprofit focus, won the Pat J. Bosco Leadership Studies Outstanding Graduating Senior Award.
