Lawrence man struck by car on Ninth Street identified, transferred to Kansas City-area hospital

Lawrence police have identified a pedestrian struck by a car about 10:15 p.m. Thursday on Ninth Street.

John Schmitt, 52, of Lawrence, was taken to a Kansas City-area hospital for treatment after being struck by a car near the intersection of Ninth and Ohio streets.

Police had been called to the scene by passersby who reported a pedestrian who appeared to be injured and was walking in the area with blood on his face, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. Witnesses told police the man appeared to be disorientedand was having trouble walking.

Before police arrived, the pedestrian had walked into traffic and had been struck by a vehicle. The officers found Schmitt laying in the street and bleeding from the head.

Police determined that the man was probably struck by the driver’s side mirror of the car, which was traveling west on Ninth Street, McKinley said. The driver stopped and attempted to help the injured man until police arrived.

Schmitt was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later transferred to a Kansas City-area hospital.

No information about his condition was available today.
