Woman injured in car accident at 21st and Iowa streets

A 26-year-old Lawrence woman was transported to a Kansas City-area hospital after a two-vehicle accident at 21st and Iowa streets shortly after 2 p.m. yesterday.

The accident occurred when Melissa Vinyard, driving a Toyota Corolla west on 21st Street, turned onto Iowa Street and was struck by a FedEx delivery truck traveling south on Iowa Street. Vinyard was transported first to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then to a Kansas City-area hospital.

Vinyard’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman.

The accident report indicated the driver of the FedEx truck, 35-year-old Alexander Andersen of Merriam, had a possible injury, but was not transported by ambulance and stated he would consult his personal physician. The Toyota Corolla was totaled, and both vehicles were towed from the scene, McKinley said.

The cause of the accident, according to police, was Vinyard’s failure to yield to traffic. She had stopped at the stop sign on 21st Street at the Iowa intersection but pulled out into traffic too soon, in front of the delivery truck, police said.
