A 20-year-old former Kansas University student has been found guilty of aggravated battery in connection with an alleged sexual assault in February at a dormitory on the KU campus.

Jeremy R. Ruzas pleaded no contest today in Douglas County District Court as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. He had been arrested on Feb. 11, after a female KU student, 19 at the time, reported to police that Ruzas had assaulted her at night in her room at Oliver Hall dormitory.

Ruzas had entered the woman’s room uninvited and was drinking on the evening of Feb. 10 before being escorted away by her friends, according to Douglas County prosecutors. But he returned after midnight and assaulted the woman while she was in bed.

Ruzas was initially charged with aggravated sexual battery and burglary but pleaded no contest to aggravated battery as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. He could face almost two years in prison or eight months of probation, depending on his criminal history.

Ruzas left the university after he was charged in the incident, and returned to his home in Illinois on a $20,000 bond, according to his court-appointed attorney, Jason Billam. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 26.
