Lawrence man arrested on suspicion of rape

A 48-year-old Lawrence man is being held in Douglas County Jail without bond after being arrested in connection with an alleged rape at an apartment in south Lawrence on Sunday.

Lawrence police arrested the man after taking a report from a female being treated for injuries at Lawrence Memorial Hospital about 4 a.m. Sunday, said Kim Murphree, a Lawrence Police Department spokeswoman. The victim told police she had been assaulted by a male acquaintance at an apartment on the city’s south side, was rendered unconscious, and thought she might have been sexually assaulted.

The man was arrested about 5 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrence Police Department’s offices at 4820 Bob Billings Parkway. Police have interviewed him and are continuing to investigate, Murphree said.

The man remained in jail today, with bond not yet posted. Douglas County prosecutors said the man may be charged Tuesday.
