From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 15, 1988:

• John William, 27, was charged this morning in Douglas County District Court with the first-degree murder of 9-year-old Richard D. Settlemyre, whose body had been found the previous evening at the Kansas River near Burcham Park. The boy’s body had been found at 7 p.m. by a search party of officers from the Lawrence Police Department, the Douglas County Sheriff’s office, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Kansas University police, and the Lawrence Fire Department. Douglas County District Court Judge Jean Shepherd had set William’s bail at $1 million, saying that the crime was a “particularly vicious occurrence” and that William posed “a risk to the children in the community.” Judge Shepherd had scheduled a preliminary hearing for the following Monday. Ed Collister, a Lawrence attorney, had been appointed to defend William.
• The Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen (LINK) had a home for at least the next two years. The LINK steering committee this week announced that the First Christian Church, 1000 Kentucky, had agreed to let LINK volunteers use its facility for another two years. LINK, which provided free meals to anyone in need of food or companionship, had opened on Feb. 14, 1985, and had been housed in the basement of St. John the Evangelist Church for its first 18 months, after which it had moved to the First Christian Church. The program regularly attracted 80 to 100 people on its operating days.
