Summer bike ride: Lawrence Bicycle Club Summer Fun Beginner’s Ride will be held Mondays. The ride begins at 6:45 p.m. at Cycle Works, 2121 Kasold, preceded at 6:15 for tech and riding tips. The ride will be approximately 10 miles (the first few rides will be seven miles) at 10 mph, mostly on the bike path. All are welcome; kids under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and all children under 18 must have a waiver form signed by a parent or guardian. Horseshoe results: Lawrence’s Wynne Mihura took first place in the B class of the Lawrence Sanctioned Horseshoe Tournament on Sunday at Broken Arrow. Topeka’s Ken Perry was runner-up in the division. In the A class, El Dorado’s Roger Vogel was first, while Topeka’s Rich Gassdorf took second.

Henrickson golf tournament: The ninth annual Bonnie Henrickson Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24 at Alvamar Country Club. Registration is available for singles, pairs and foursomes. All proceeds from the tournament will go to support Kansas Universithy women’s basketball and the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Breast Center. The event includes a four-person scramble at 1 p.m., followed by a dinner and live and silent auctions beginning at 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for best four-women team, best four-man team, best four-person mixed team, longest drive, closest to the pin and hole-in-one. The KU women’s basketball team and staff will be there throughout the day to cheer on the teams. Cost of entry is $100 for individuals, $200 for pairs and $400 for foursomes. Goodwin named coach: 1995 Lawrence High graduate Ryan Goodwin on Tuesday was introduced as the head baseball coach at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Goodwin, 35, takes over the NAIA program after several years working as an assistant coach at all levels. His most recent stops include working with the pitchers at Washburn University the past two seasons and serving as the pitching coach at Div. I Jackson State. The Wiley Wildcats play in the Red River Athletic Conference and are coming off a 5-33 season.
