Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. Summer bike ride: Lawrence Bicycle Club Summer Fun Beginner’s Ride will be held Mondays. The ride begins at 6:45 p.m. at Cycle Works, 2121 Kasold, preceded at 6:15 for tech and riding tips. The ride will be approximately 10 miles (the first few rides will be seven miles) at 10 mph, mostly on the bike path. All are welcome; kids under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and all children under 18 must have a waiver form signed by a parent or guardian. Jayhawk baseball summer camp: The KU Baseball All Star Camp for ages 13-18 will be held July 25-28 at KU. It includes daily instructional sessions, scrimmage games, team concept and more. Overnight or day campers accepted. Contact KU Baseball Office 864-7907 for information.

LMH runs: Two 5K run/walks to benefi the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association will be held in the coming months: 7:30 a.m. July 20 in Tonganoxie and 8 a.m. Aug. 17 in Baldwin City. City golf tournament: The city golf tournament will be played July 13-14 at Alvamar Public (Saturday) and Lawrence Country Club (Sunday). Veritas no pad football camp: The Veritas Christian School no-pad camp is for home school or Veritas Christian School athletes entering sixth-12th grades. The camp will run July 15-19. Camp times are 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 8:30-10:30 ap.m. Wednesday. Camp fee is $25 per player. Cyclist Schmalz third: Free State High graduate Joseph Schmalz placed third among 200 cyclists at the Elite Nationals Road Race in Madison, Wis. Schmalz finished in a time of 3:25.03.

Summer wrestling scuffle: The Summer Scuffle will take place July 13 at Baldwin High. Weigh-ins will be at 7 p.m. on Friday or 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. It is a dual team tournament in the high school division; extras can come and be placed on a team (entry is $15). No USA card required. Folkstyle. Also, youth matches paired, $10 entry. Horseshoe results: Lawrence’s Wynne Mihura took first place in the B class of the Lawrence Sanctioned Horseshoe Tournament on Sunday at Broken Arrow. Topeka’s Ken Perry was runner-up in the division. In the A class, El Dorado’s Roger Vogel was first, while Topeka’s Rich Gassdorf took second.

Henrickson golf tournament: The ninth annual Bonnie Henrickson Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24 at Alvamar Country Club. Registration is available for singles, pairs and foursomes. All proceeds from the tournament will go to support Kansas Universithy women’s basketball and the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Breast Center. The event includes a four-person scramble at 1 p.m., followed by a dinner and live and silent auctions beginning at 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for best four-women team, best four-man team, best four-person mixed team, longest drive, closest to the pin and hole-in-one. The KU women’s basketball team and staff will be there throughout the day to cheer on the teams. Cost of entry is $100 for individuals, $200 for pairs and $400 for foursomes. Goodwin named coach: 1995 Lawrence High graduate Ryan Goodwin on Tuesday was introduced as the head baseball coach at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Goodwin, 35, takes over the NAIA program after several years working as an assistant coach at all levels. His most recent stops include working with the pitchers at Washburn University the past two seasons and serving as the pitching coach at Div. I Jackson State. The Wiley Wildcats play in the Red River Athletic Conference and are coming off a 5-33 season.
