40 years ago: Sonny and Cher to perform at KU

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 10, 1973:

  • Sonny and Cher Bono, described as “a husband and wife duo who star in their own weekly television comedy,” signed a contract this week agreeing to perform this fall at KU’s homecoming concert. The Student Union Activities (SUA) office had been negotiating with the pair since May 8. The KU concert, set for October 13, was to take place “in the round” at Allen Fieldhouse. Comedian David Brenner was also scheduled to perform. Sonny and Cher were to be accompanied by a full orchestra, and a special dressing room would be assembled for Cher, who was to make several costume changes during the performance.
  • Clyde L. Walker today became the new Kansas University athletic director. The current assistant athletic director at North Carolina, Walker was replacing Wade Stinson who had announced his resignation in November 1972 and had left in mid-January. The job had been held in the interim by A. C. (Dutch) Lonborg. “I don’t want to make any promises,” said Walker to reporters today, “and I won’t perform any miracles overnight. I believe in two things — hard work and integrity — and I don’t think you’ll be hearing anything negative coming from this athletic department.”
