Former Kansas University point guard Tyshawn Taylor scored a team-leading 17 points off 6-of-18 shooting with one assist against six turnovers in the Brooklyn Nets’ 76-67 loss to Detroit in an Orlando Summer League opener on Sunday.

Taylor, a second-year pro, went 0-for-3 from three and hit five of seven free throws. He had four rebounds in 27 minutes in the coaching debut of former NBA guard Jason Kidd.

“I was talking bad about him last year when he hit that three on us and kicked his foot out and everything,” Taylor joked to ESPN New York on Saturday, referring to Kidd’s game-winning three (for the Knicks) against the Nets last December.

“Now, he’s my coach. It’s cool, man. It’s a different situation that a lot of guys probably aren’t used to, but like I said, he’s a natural leader, so he’s comfortable in this role, and it’s comfortable being around him,” Taylor added.

Rookie odds: Former KU guard Ben McLemore of the Sacramento Kings is listed at 10/1 odds to win 2013-14 NBA rookie of the year honors, as reported by the Salt Lake Tribune and Vegas company Bovada.

Trey Burke of the Utah Jazz is 4/1, followed by Orlando’s Victor Oladipo, 11/2; Portland’s C.J. McCollum, 15/2; Washington’s Otto Porter, 15/2; Philadelphia’s Michael Carter-Williams, 9/1 and Cleveland’s Anthony Bennett, 10/1.

Rush to be ready: Brandon Rush (torn ACL) should be ready to practice at the start of Utah Jazz training camp in October, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

His agent, Mark Bartelstein, told the paper 28-year-old Rush (his birthday was Sunday) “is rehabbing, is doing great” and that he “should be ready to go” at camp. Rush, who has averaged 9.1 points a game in five seasons, is in the final year of a two-year, $8 million deal.

Stanley Johnson eyes Late Night: Stanley Johnson, a 6-6 senior small forward from Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif., who is ranked No. 8 nationally by Rivals.com., tells the Louisville Courier-Journal he is considering visiting KU for the Oct. 4 Late Night in the Phog.

He will also make official visits to Kentucky (Big Blue Madness on Oct. 18), Arizona (Oct. 12), Florida (Oct. 30) and Oregon. He will make unofficial visits to USC and UCLA. Johnson said No. 4-rated Cliff Alexander (6-8, Chicago Curie) also wants to visit KU for Late Night.

Alexander, who lists 10 schools, tells GOAZCATS.com he will visit KU, Arizona, Louisville and Memphis in the fall. He also is considering Michigan State, Kentucky, Illinois, DePaul, Indiana and Baylor.
