From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 7, 1913:

• “Shortly before ten o’clock this morning, a line of gaily bedecked touring cars swept through Lawrence, hardly waiting long enough for a friendly ‘honk honk’ on their way through. This city is usually more than a whistling station, but the autos this morning did not stop at all. The roads were good and the machines were evidently having no trouble, for they scarcely slowed down in passing through Lawrence…. Eighteen passenger cars and two trucks are with the party which is on a six weeks’ tour from Indianapolis to Los Angeles, under the auspices of the Indiana Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. Among the tourists was Elwood Haynes, inventor of the gasoline automobile and recognized as the father of the American automobile industry. Officials made a special effort to induce Mr. Haynes to make the trip, feeling that it would be an honor to have with them the man whose crude little horseless carriage of 1893-1894 was the forerunner of the modern six-cylinder car.”
• “The first Sunday train on the Southern Kansas came in yesterday. It carried a large number of passengers both ways. The train has been agitated for years, but never until now did the Santa Fe feel warranted in putting it on.”
• “Most of the teachers who will preside over the rural schools of Douglas County for the coming term have been selected by the school boards in the various districts. This year, there will be 105 teachers in the country, an increase of two over last year…. The average salary of teachers in this county will be about $55 this year. Last year, the average salaries for male was $55.70 and for females $52.61.
• “Arrangements are being made today for a big picnic to be given at Brown’s Grove tomorrow by the Salvation Army. The outing is for the benefit of mothers, children and old folks of Lawrence, and a crowd of them is expected to be present tomorrow when the festivities begin. A number of the older people who would like to attend will not be able to make the trip, but the number will probably reach 150. The Lawrence Automobile Club has agreed to furnish transportation to the Grove.”
