Topeka ? The state is seeking proposals for different office space for the Department for Children and Families in Lawrence.

Theresa Freed, a spokeswoman for DCF, said today that the agency is looking for a building that would better suit employees and clients.

“We are just looking at what options there would be,” she said.

Freed emphasized that DCF was not considering a reduction in its presence in Lawrence.

In 2011, Lawrence officials were shocked when Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration decided to close the Lawrence office at 19th and Delaware streets. Then, DCF was known as the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.

After a public uproar, Brownback eventually reversed course and the office stayed open.

The Lawrence DCF operation is in two leased buildings in the 1900 block of Delaware St.

Freed said DCF officials would like to see if there is the possibility of putting the operation in one building. She also said DCF would like a better lobby area and rooms with more privacy for clients.

In its Request for Proposal, DCF said it is seeking leased space with 24,975 square feet. That is about 5,000 square feet less than the two buildings now leased.

In a pre-proposal conference last week, representatives of 8 potential bidders attended, she said.

The deadline for bid proposals is July 29.
