Lawrence teen attends presidential inauguration

Sixteen-year-old Lawrence resident Rianon Wallace-Demby was at President Barack Obama’s swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 21.

And last week’s was her second Obama inauguration.

“It’s a historical event; it’s the first black president and the first one we elected twice,” Wallace-Demby said. “It’s not going to happen again.”

Wallace-Demby attended the inauguration with her mother and grandmother. She attended the event the first time in 2008 with her father, J.R. Demby.

“She has a strong sense of history in and of herself,” Demby said. “The history of all of this is really important to her.”

She enjoyed the speech Obama gave.

“To be able to have that memory to pass on to future generations, not a lot of people are able to say they were there,” Wallace-Demby said.
