25 years ago: State census workers ready for door-to-door survey

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 30, 1988:

State census workers were getting ready to hit the streets in Lawrence next week, making a special effort to double-check the counts of Kansas University students living off campus. Frank Ybarra, a state census spokesman, said that his office was taking special precautions to ascertain that no one was being skipped or counted twice. “From the very beginning we’ve been expecting to do much more checking in college towns like Lawrence and Manhattan,” Ybarra said. Students were to be counted at their permanent residences for census purposes; all information was considered confidential and would not affect a student’s tuition status, Ybarra said.
