25 years ago: Two KU alums involved in Super Bowl

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 28, 1988:

  • Two former Kansas University students were to be involved in Sunday’s Super Bowl in San Diego. Alvin Walton, a defensive back for the Washington Redskins, would help his team face the Denver Broncos for the NFL championship. The other KU alum would not appear until halftime, when Shirley Hargiss Oberheide, a special education teacher at San Diego High School, was scheduled to be one of 88 piano players performing.
  • Members of the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission this week voted 8-2 to recommend a use permitted upon review request for a proposed 6.1-acre construction landfill in North Lawrence. Despite protests from several neighbors, the commission approved the recommendation for the site just north of the Kansas Turnpike and west of North Michigan Street.
