Commercial publishers have a great deal of control and a great many demands when it comes to sharing art and photography, driving many artists and photographers to self-publish.

A new exhibit at Kansas University’s Art and Design Gallery features more than 200 such independently published photography books, journals and magazines from across the globe. The exhibition, titled “A Fair,” looks at the impact of emerging methods of independent publishing and distribution on contemporary art photography.

A panel discussion called “Photography and the Book” is planned for 6:30 p.m. Friday at the gallery, located on the third floor of KU’s Art and Design Building, 1467 Jayhawk Blvd.

KU’s department of design and the Photo Forum at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art are co-hosting the panel, which will feature moderator April Watson, associate curator of photography at the Nelson, and panelists Elijah Gowin, publisher and University of Missouri-Kansas City professor of photography; Larissa Leclair, founder of the Indie Photobook Library; and Travis Shaffer, exhibit curator and KU visiting assistant professor of photo media.

“A Fair” runs through Feb. 15.
