Lions girls lose second straight at Emporia Tournament

? Lawrence High’s girls basketball team dropped its second straight game in the Emporia Tournament on Friday, falling to Derby, 55-38, in the consolation semifinals.

After a strong showing in a loss to Topeka Seaman in the first round Thursday, the Lions got off to a slow start against Derby. They fell behind 16-6 after one quarter and 30-15 at halftime.

“It was a disappointing game, for sure, because we played a good game yesterday (Thursday),” LHS coach Nick Wood said. “We wanted to take a step forward, and we didn’t do that. Hopefully we’ll bounce back tomorrow (this) morning and be ready to go.”

Kionna Coleman led the Lions with 11 points and eight rebounds, and Bri Anderson, Makayla Bell and Imani Simmons added six points apiece,

“Collectively, as a unit, our level of play wasn’t where it needed to be, for whatever reason,” Wood said. “Hopefully the girls will take ownership of that and we can make something positive happen tomorrow and get some momentum heading into the rest of the season.”

The Lions (2-8) will play Goddard Eisenhower for seventh place at 11 a.m. today.
