LHS girls fall in first round at Emporia tourney

Lawrence High’s girls basketball team gave Topeka Seaman all it wanted in the first half. But Seaman outscored the Lions by 11 points in the third quarter and claimed a 60-45 victory Thursday night in the first round of the Emporia Tournament.

“Honestly, we played pretty decent,” LHS coach Nick Wood said. “At halftime, we were only down four. We had the game going at our pace, how we wanted to play. We turned the ball over a few too many times and didn’t make as many shots as we needed to.”

Kionna Coleman led the Lions with 17 points and eight rebounds. Bri Anderson added 10 points, and Kylie Seaman scored nine.

Wood praised his team’s defensive effort. The Lions forced Seaman into 26 turnovers.

“Our defense was pretty disruptive,” Wood said, “but unfortunately we couldn’t take advantage as much as we needed to.”

Seaman led 24-20 at halftime, then pulled away for a 41-26 lead after three quarters. The Lions played Seaman evenly in the fourth quarter, 19-19.

Lawrence (2-7) will play Derby at 3:15 p.m. today in a consolation-round game.
