How to help: Headquarters needs volunteers to answer hotline calls

Headquarters Counseling Center is seeking empathetic, caring and nonjudgmental volunteers to answer its counseling and suicide prevention hotline calls. It will soon be starting its interview and screening process for its spring training program, which this year will include ASIST training, national evidence-based suicide prevention training program. Learn more at one of its upcoming information meetings: from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at Fire Station No. 5, 1911 Stewart Ave.; or from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St. At these information meetings, prospective volunteers have the opportunity to talk with current volunteers about what the volunteer work has done for them, both personally and professionally. Because of the nature of the work, volunteers must be at least 20 years old with a minimum of one year of independent living from a parent/guardian.

Immediate needs

• Heartland Community Health Center is looking for an individual to volunteer as a :resource specialist” in the HCHC food pantry. This volunteer will gain valuable experience working with underserved populations, connecting them to various resources in the community to ensure that all needs of the client are met. • Lawrence Meals on Wheels is in need of several new volunteers to take over six to eight routes that have recently become available. Regular volunteers are sought to commit to at least one route per week to deliver meals to homebound community members. This is a great opportunity for a local businesses, community groups or churches to take on by committing to a route and scheduling group members for different days of the week. Volunteers pick up meals for their route at 11:15 a.m. on their assigned day and should count on delivering meals for about 45 minutes.
