From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 20, 1973:

• Substantial renovations of the Community Building, 115 W. 11th, were needed, according to a report by the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department. The 1940 building was “structurally sound,” the report stated on the authority of local contractor Robert Green, but the building needed to be renovated to increase its usability to the public. Among the proposed changes were the construction of a handball court on the stage in the main auditorium and the division of the basement into separate rooms, one of which could be made an exercise room. The writers of the report also suggested fixing the tiling of the front lobby floor, plastering and painting the gym walls, replacing rotting ceiling tile, repairing and reconditioning the electrical system, and contracting for a complete roof inspection.
• Three television sets, valued at $1,500 total, had been stolen from the Holiday Inn Motel, 2309 Iowa Street. The innkeeper, Rita Skaggs, told police that the theft had probably occurred on Sunday night or Monday.
