Free State boys win fifth place at McPherson tourney

? Free State High’s boys basketball team erased an 11-point third-quarter deficit and defeated Manhattan, 59-52, on Saturday for fifth place in the McPherson Invitational.

The Firebirds outscored Manhattan 33-15 in the last 12 minutes.

“We could have rolled over and let them walk over us,” Free State coach Chuck Law said. “We were down 11 points in the third quarter and somehow found the fortitude to come back. Their confidence never wavered.”

Cole Moreano scored 18 points to lead the Firebirds. Khadre Lane added 13 points, and Reshawn Caro and Blake Winslow scored eight points apiece.

The Firebirds went 2-1 in the tournament.

“We just wanted to get out of there with two wins,” Law said, “and I’m really proud of their effort.”

The Firebirds (4-7) are off until Jan. 29, when they play host to Shawnee Mission West.
