From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 18, 1973:

• A motorcycle rider had been tossed from his machine into the bed of a pickup in a recent accident at Harvard and Iowa. Police said that Robert E. Flickner, 23, had suffered a leg injury when his motorcycle struck the rear of the pickup stopped for a traffic signal. Damage to the pickup was estimated at $50, and to the motorcycle at $250.
• Several Kansas University students claimed this morning that they had stolen the Kansas State University mascot, a wildcat named Touchdown VII, from its cage from Manhattan. A staff member at the Sunset Zoo in Manhattan, where the wildcat was usually kept, verified that the animal was missing this morning. An anonymous KU student reported that the students had taken the wildcat to a farm near Lawrence and were planning to return it to K-State authorities this week when KU was to meet K-State in a basketball game in Lawrence. The student refused to release the names of those involved in the catnapping.
• Most Lawrence city employees were to receive a five percent pay increase under a new pay plan adopted this week by the Lawrence City Commission. Changes in the pay ranges for most city job classifications were intended to “meet the market at mid-range,” said City Manager Buford Watson.
