From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 17, 1988:

• Administrators of Lawrence Memorial Hospital were startled, but happy, this week to discover that LMH was listed among hospitals with the lowest charges in the nation. The “1987 Hospital Daily Service Charges” report placed the Lawrence area’s hospital costs as fifth-lowest in the U.S. for “average charge per stay,” compared to other metropolitan areas. At $94 a day, LMH also had one of the lowest charges in the state for room and board.
• About 500 Ottawa residents had turned out the previous night to greet Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart at a homecoming reception at Ottawa Middle School. Hart later attended the Greater Ottawa Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet, where he was the featured speaker. Hart had been born Gary Hartpence in Ottawa and had graduated from the high school there in 1954.
• Members of the Kansas Racing Commission said today that applications for pari-mutuel licenses would probably be ready for distribution by the end of the week. The commission had approved the application form at their weekly meeting, and the forms would become official after a review by a joint rules committee of the Legislature.
