From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 13, 1988:

• The Lawrence City Commission this week unanimously approved first reading of an ordinance revising the city’s present truck route ordinance. City Manager Buford Watson said that city staff had proposed the reform because the current ordinance was too vague to be properly enforced. The new ordinance would require trucks exceeding 20,000 pounds to stay on designated routes unless making deliveries in the city. The routes would be Iowa Street, Sixth Street, North Second Street, 23rd Street, the Kansas Turnpike access road, and part of Rockledge Road. Commissioners had decided to wait four weeks before giving final approval to allow negotiations on secondary truck routes that would limit trucks on narrow residential streets during deliveries.
• Signs were posted this week near the Bowersock Dam on the Kansas River to warn boaters that they were approaching an open face dam just east of the Massachusetts Street bridge.
