From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 11, 1973:

A Salina consultant firm hired by the city submitted a recommendation today for substantial expansion of the present Lawrence Municipal Airport. The firm of Bucher and Willis recommended to the city commission that the airport expand at its present site at a cost of $1,930,000 by 1980. City funding, and probably a federal grant, would be necessary to make the suggested changes. Calling the airport “quite deficient,” the consultants cited the need for “a minimum of 3,900 feet of principal runway” which would need to be expanded to a 4,900-foot runway by 1975 and a 5,700-foot runway by 1980. A crosswind runway of 3,900 feet was also proposed, as well as a taxiway parallel to the main runway. New taxiways, aprons, fencing, lighting, parking, four-lane access roadway, and a $35,000 terminal were also recommended. A control tower would be justified between 1980 and 1990, according to the 79-page report.
