25 years ago: Local business sponsors first coat giveaway

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 7, 1988:

  • The chilly weather and recent snow had made this week a very appropriate and welcome one for the first “Share the Warmth” coat giveaway project. Coats donated by local residents had been cleaned by project sponsor Scotch Industries before being offered to anyone in need. Scotch Fabric Care centers in Lawrence and Topeka had collected 5,084 coats during the drive, about 1,500 of which were scheduled to be given away today in Lawrence. By about 10:30 a.m., 50 coats had been selected from the giveaway location at the Malls shopping center, 23rd and Louisiana streets. “Oh, this is so great,” said one delighted recipient as she replaced the light windbreaker she had been wearing with her newly acquired coat. “Warmth!”
  • Those rising before dawn in Lawrence today had been treated to a beautiful sight which may have rewarded their tenacity in leaving their warm beds on a cold morning. “As the last flakes of a light overnight snowfall fluttered down, the setting moon shone clearly in the west, its light penetrating a thin cloud cover and reflecting off falling flakes and fresh snow. Perhaps there was a moonbow too … or a snowbow.”
