Sixth-graders at West Middle School held a penny war in December to raise money for the local food bank, Just Food, but school officials aren’t yet saying how much they raised.

That will be announced during a school assembly Tuesday morning, along with the name of the winning team.

Dan Karasek, an English and social studies teacher who helped coordinate the project, said the school’s estimated 230 sixth-graders competed in three teams – Thunder, Lightning and Rain. Students collected pennies in their own team’s jar to rack up positive points, and dropped larger coins into an opposing team’s jar to give them negative points.

Just Food serves as the Douglas County food bank for 35 partner agencies. Launched in 2009, it now serves more than 8,000 people per month in the community, according to the agency’s website.
