With less than an inch of new snow overnight, streets were largely clear in Lawrence Wednesday morning.

Even so, Kansas Department of Transportation officials advised drivers to be careful, because temperatures dropped below freezing overnight and ice accumulated on many side streets and roads. City snow plows continued to work residential side streets overnight and during the day Wednesday. By afternoon, city officials said, all city streets should have been plowed. Residents who thought their street was missed were asked to call the city at 785-832-3031.

Highways in the Lawrence area, including the Kansas Turnpike, Kansas Highway 10 and U.S. Highways 59 and 40, remained “slushy,” Wednesday afternoon, according to KDOT’s road conditions map. The Kansas Turnpike was clear, however, between Lawrence and Topeka.

Temperatures were expected to reach above freezing Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service, with a high of 35. The Lawrence area was not likely to see any significant snow or other precipitation Wednesday, but strong wind gusts would likely continue throughout the day.

Westar Energy reported only four Douglas County customers without power early Wednesday morning.
