Kansas University’s annual Rock Chalk Revue variety show is back for its 64th year, but this time it has a new fundraising focus.

The musical-comedy show produced by members of KU’s greek community this year will raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County as well as a new endowed fund to provide support for KU students and service groups.

This year’s performances will be at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at the Lied Center.

The 2013 show, with the theme “All Bets are Off,” will include five performances by KU greek chapters — four that pair fraternities and sororities, and one performed by members of one sorority, Delta Gamma.

Overland Park senior Katie Lewis, one of two executive directors for the revue, said the one-sorority show might be a first for the Rock Chalk Revue, and it will be the first all-female? performance in several years. It’s also the first time both executive directors have been women, she said.

Lewis, who’s been involved with Rock Chalk Revue since she was a sophomore, said this show is the best she’s seen.

“They’re all really funny, and they all have really awesome singing and dancing this year,” Lewis said.

Some 300 students have worked on the show from start to finish, said Wichita senior Matt Moore, the show’s executive producer. And somewhere around 500 students have put in work at some point in the process, including the fall semester when greek chapters write and produce shows and compete to make it in the final revue.

During the spring semester as the show has approached, students put in hours practicing every weekday and weekend.

“It’s an absurd amount of work,” Lewis said. “I haven’t slept in weeks.”

Last year’s show raised about $64,000 for the United Way of Douglas County, raising its total cumulative fundraising for the United Way to more than $1 million. Moore said the Rock Chalk Revue advisory board decided that made it a good time to move in a different fundraising direction.

Organizers are aiming to raise $70,000 this year. Half the money will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters, and half will go to the new Dream Maker fund set up by the Rock Chalk Revue board through the KU Endowment Association.

Moore said the goal is for that fund to eventually become like a United Way fund for students, distributing a certain amount of money each year to student service groups or even individual students in need, based on an application process.

The five performances that won spots in the show, announced in November, are:

• “The Catcher Gone Awry,” Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.

• “Joke’s On You,” Kappa Delta sorority and Sigma Nu fraternity.

• “Liberty by Lunchtime,” Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

• “Birds of a Feather,” Gamma Phil Beta sorority and Sigma Chi fraternity.

• “Money Talks,” Delta Gamma sorority.
