Kansas softball claims two wins

? Facing a four-run deficit and down to its final out, Kansas University’s softball team rallied past Auburn, 11-10, for its second victory Friday in the Islanders Classic.

The Jayhawks also defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 11-3.

Auburn took a 9-4 lead into the seventh inning, but the Jayhawks rallied for seven runs to take an 11-9 lead.

“It’s tough to do. You don’t see a comeback like that very often,” KU coach Megan Smith said. “Our girls were determined, they stayed focused and stayed within themselves. They were fighters.”

Freshman Alex Hugo and sophomore Chanin Naudin opened the seventh with singles, and an error on a ground ball by freshman Chalen Brickey loaded the bases with nobody out.

Senior Rosie Hull drove in the first run of the inning with a single.

Then, with two outs, Maggie Hull hit a two-run single to cut the Auburn lead to 9-7. Maddie Stein drove in a run with a single. And Mariah Montgomery put KU ahead, 10-9, with a two-run single. Hugo then drove in a run to put the Jayhawks ahead, 11-9.

The Jayhawks (9-3) will meet Southern University at 11 a.m. today.
