Army Pvt. Colton B. Bender, a 2012 graduate of Free State High School, has completed 10 weeks of basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. He graduated with honors after completing mental, physical and weapons training. He then completed his advanced individual training at Gulfport, Miss., and is now stationed at Fort Knox, Ky.

Top scholars at Southwestern College in Winfield and at Southwestern College Professional Studies have been announced with the release of the Dean’s Honor Roll for the fall 2012 semester. Full-time students who earned GPA of at least 3.70 were eligible. Area students include Trey Bruton, Meriden; Dylan Moore, Ottawa; and Allyssa Zentner, Grantville.

Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, has announced its fall 2012 honors lists. Students with a 4.0 GPA are named to the President’s List. Students with a GPA between 3.65 and 3.99 are named to the Honors list. Students with a GPA between 3.25 and 3.64 are named to the Dean’s list. Cordley School captured the second-place trophy and Sunset Hill placed third in the K-5 division at the Rockhurst High School Chess Tournament Jan. 19 in Kansas City, Mo. Lawrence-area medal winners in K-12 were Kaustubh Nimkar, Lawrence High, 6th; Apramay Mishra, Southwest Middle School, 13th; Joseph Miller, Free State High, 17th; and Robert Newman, LHS, 20th. K-5 medal winners were Oliver Rubenstein, Raintree, 4th; Isaac Lee, Sunset Hill, 5th; Rita Joseph, Sunset Hill, 6th; Annelise Hoopes, Cordley, 13th; and Ben Shryock, Cordley, 18th.

Liam L. Smith, of Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2012 semester at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., by maintaining a 3.5 GPA or better.

Sebastian Schoneich, of Lawrence, a sophomore in biochemistry and philosophy at Kansas University, has been named to the University Scholars Program. Students are selected on the basis of academic credentials, commitment to their education, intellectual promise, and evaluations by instructors, advisers and other faculty members. Students in their second year at KU with a 3.75 cumulative GPA are invited to apply.
