25 years ago: Second candidate announces for county sheriff

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 23, 1988:

Local private investigator Gale Pinegar, 45, announced this week that he was planning to seek the Democratic nomination for Douglas County Sheriff. Pinegar was a former Lawrence police officer, the former owner of a cabinet business, and was now co-owner, with his son Terry, of the Lawrence Security Patrol. Neither Pinegar nor Undersheriff Loren Anderson, who had said that he would seek the Republican nomination, had officially filed with the Douglas County Clerk’s office as of this morning. After more than two decades as sheriff, Rex Johnson had announced earlier this month that he would step down in December; a new sheriff was to be elected in November.
